About

Have you ever heard of anyone growing as many plants as they can in a studio apartment? And not just simple house plants: herbs, potatoes, peppers, carrots… This blog is about bringing a little bit of that homestead life to the big city—All with a tiny budget. Like normal homesteaders, I have to use whatever I have on hand. Through my experience I’ve learned to incorporate frugal ways to save money, reuse, recycle, and be healthier. This blog details things I try, find, and make. I post regularly about my studio apartment garden, time saving and healthy recipes, home remedies, and creative ways to organize it all.

How It All Started

When I first started…

I moved with my husband to the 14th largest city in the United States. There weren’t a lot of choices for apartments that were within our budget. We chose a quaint studio apartment near enough to campus. I’ve never liked living in big cities and the adjustment to the new lifestyle was hard. I have a love of nature and not having a good outlet for that love made it even harder. I also wondered if there was a better way to eat healthy and save money. Since I can’t get a homestead right now, I can’t have a green house, and I can only visit my folks’ farm here and there, I decided I was going to do as much as I could with what I had. I don’t have a lot of space in my studio apartment. The main room is less than 11 ft x 13 ft. I can’t do any fancy set-ups with lights and pumps, hydroponics and aquaponics. But I have found some creative ways to start plants and grow food in a tiny apartment and on a tiny budget.

The Face Behind Green Urbaner

That’s me! I was- and do- use my bathtub to pot and repot plants.

My name is Kylie, I’m in college for my Bachelor of Science in Theoretical Mathematics. I’m a wife to a wonderful man named Michael, also going for his Bachelor of Science but in Physics.

I have a dog, cat, three fish, and way too many plants. My experiences and passions have led me to many things… I’ve lived on a farm, been a machinist at Nasa, and even had a few businesses.

That’s our wonderful dog, Zeke, and our cat, Veerus.

While I enjoy many left brain things, I also enjoy art, being creative, and helping others. My goals in life are to find what speaks to my soul most and to have a deep understanding of myself, others, and the world around me.
